RYA Keelboat Training

Our training centre has a great reputation and success rate. Run by Neil Crowder and his team of RYA qualified instructors we aim to get you through the course as quickly and thoroughly as we can.

We therefore only offer courses to individuals or small family/friend groups. We won't mix you with people you don't know and keep our course numbers to a minimum - to give you more hands on experience.

The National Sailing Scheme enables you to learn to sail a larger cruising yacht with confidence. The course has been developed to complement other RYA courses such as Day Skipper, which concentrates on navigation and regulations rather than sailing techniques.

This is a great way to prepare for a new boat, flotilla or bareboat charter holiday. Many charter companies now ask for Level 2 as a minimum qualification in the Mediterranean.

You can shorten your Competent Crew course by 3 days with the Level 2 certificate.

We use our fleet of Beneteau Oceanis charter yachts to train on, which range from 32-feet to 37-feet, depending on availability. All are wheel-steered and fully equipped for cruising.

The course is split into 4 levels -

RYA Level 1 — Start Sailing - Getting Afloat

Knowledge level and previous experience - none required

This 1-2 day course will introduce you to sailing and go through the basics of handling a yacht with some basic theory and simple techniques. You will be able to prepare the boat, handle the sails, sail upwind and downwind with confidence. Sail in light winds under supervision.

RYA Level 2 — Basic Skills - The foundation of the sport

Knowledge level and previous experience - To Level 1 standard

Sometimes combined with Level 1 into a 5-day course; to complement your previous experience you can now start more advanced skills such as sail setting, mooring, coming alongside, handling under power, man over board drill and anchoring. Collision regulations are also covered. On successful completion you will be able to confidently take charge of a yacht in light wind conditions.

RYA Seamanship Skills — Sail independently

Knowledge level and previous experience - To Level 2 standard

To take this course you need to have successfully completed Level 2 as it introduces skills needed to handle a yacht in more demanding strong wind conditions. This will give you the confidence to make seamanlike decisions in safety. Anchoring, mooring and coming alongside, reefing sails, heaving to are just some of the areas covered.

RYA Sailing with Spinnakers

Again aimed at sailors who have completed Level 2 you will be able to rig the boat, launch and retrieve, gybe and trim for the best possible course downwind using a conventional spinnaker

Each course normally takes 2 days to complete

5 Day Intensive Course

A great way to learn quickly is on a 5 day intensive course. This really is a fast way to build your skills and confidence. Most sailors achieve Level 2 with confidence during this time.
