OB Sailing – Who we are and how we started
We operate in a World Heritage Site in the beautiful Lake District in northern England on the largest lake with stunning scenery and easy access to great facilities in Bowness on Windermere.
OB Sailing was set up in 2003 by Neil and Yvonne Crowder and a fantastic band of Instructors and Skippers with a passion for sailing.
We started with one yacht (still have her “Dione”, Oceanis 311) taking guests out from the local hotels and local folk wanting to see the fabulous scenery from the water. We then became an RYA training centre offering keelboat tuition on the National Sailing Scheme. This later developed into the Sail Cruising Scheme levels one and two that now feed students in to the Dayskipper and Yachtmaster schemes. We also introduced Powerboat levels one and two using fast planing rigid boats or displacement motor cruisers.
In 2005 we started the yacht charter operation by buying the Oceanis 343 “Rhea”. This double our capacity and we also had a number of owned yachts for charter as well. We then bought the Oceanis 31 “Helene” and the Oceanis 34 “Phoebe” to complete the fleet. The aim has always been to offer easy to sail yachts, in superb sailing condition, when you want to sail. We don’t have fixed start and end dates, or fixed periods, so you use the yachts when and how long you require it for. Easy really.
We operate on jetties in Parsonage Bay, in the centre of the lake, with easy access and only a short walk or drive to the local amenities.
Maiden Marine run the jetties and have a fantastic chandlery, sell new Beneteau yachts and motor launches, and also secondhand yachts of all types. A dangerous place to go if you are browsing for a new boat or bit of kit. They have been friends for years and great supporters of us and our customers. Give them a visit sometime
